Children’s Room Closing for Renovation starting on Monday, March 20, 2017

Children’s Room Renovation Update

The children’s room will be closed starting on Monday, March 20, 2017 to finish preparations for the recarpeting and renovation project.  We anticipate the room will re-open by mid-May the latest.

A full outline of the project is below, but highlighted here are things you should know:

  • As our collection will be limited, if there are certain titles or topics you are looking for, please request them online and they will be located at another C/WMARS library and delivered here for pickup. If you need assistance in ordering materials from other libraries, library staff is always available to help.
  • There will be NO PLAY AREA for the duration of the renovation. Programs in the Community Room will continue, but after the programs end, there will be no space for children to play or parents to socialize with their children nearby.  Please plan accordingly.
  • There may be no area for children younger than 6th grade in the afterschool hours on Thursdays and Fridays. If middle school children come to the library after school on Thursdays and Fridays they will be permitted to use the adult study area, but must meet behavior requirements for that area.
  • Check the Lost & Found outside the Children’s Room for items you may have left behind. On March 24th any unclaimed items will be donated or discarded.

What’s happening?

We are awaiting details from the contractor on exact timelines for the carpeting to be installed, but will be moving forward with preparation for the room renovation and carpeting project, which we anticipate will be completed by mid-May.  Here’s the information you need to know!

  • We have begun moving collections that will be available during the renovation out to the reception area near the audiobooks and music CDs.
  • We will have some portion of the majority of children’s collections available throughout the renovation.
  • All children’s collections have had their status updated to state “storage” regardless of their location during the renovation. This will make our collection an in-house browsing collection only; none of our children’s materials will be able to be requested online or shipped to other libraries for the term of the renovation.
  • As our collection will be limited, if there are certain titles or topics you are looking for, please request them online and they will be located at another C/WMARS library and delivered here for pickup. If you need assistance in ordering materials from other libraries, library staff is always available to help.
  • At this point the room is still open, but when we reach the point that we are ready to move the collections to store for the duration of the project, the room will be closed. We will announce the room closing date at least two days in advance.
  • Once the room is closed, there will be NO PLAY AREA for the duration of the renovation.

What will the room look like when the project is done?

  • The room will have new carpeting throughout the area. (Funded by October 2016 Town Meeting)
  • The wall paint will be refreshed.
  • The preschool play area will be expanded and include all new educational toys, as well as updated and new furnishings, including an Imagination Play Station. (Funding from a “Mind in the Making” Institute of Museum and Library Services grant through the Library Services & Technology Act. The grant is administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.)
  • There will be a child-friendly iPad Kiosk with 4 iPads loaded with children’s apps! (Funded by a generous gift from the Macy PTO!)
  • The shelving will be reconfigured to a simpler layout, making browsing and locating library materials easier!

How can you help?

  • Check the Lost & Found outside Children’s Room for items you may have left behind. On March 24th any unclaimed items will be donated or discarded.
  • After March 13th and continuing until the room closes for the carpeting, please check out as many books as you think you will need to last you through renovation and don’t hesitate to renew online or by contacting us during the renovation. (Our limit is 50 books per cardholder)
