LETTER OF THE DAY: U
(please note: this is a general idea of what happened during Alphabits. Variations occur between Wednesday and Thursday classes depending on how many children are present, attention level, etc.)
Song: Alphabet Song
Activity: Show and Tell
The children shared what they brought that begins with the letter U!
Story: Ugly Fish (by Kara LeReau)
Activity: “U” Hokey Pokey
Instead of putting our body parts “in” and “out,” we put them “up” and “down”!
Activity: Word Bingo
Each child was given a coloring page of an umbrella. In between coloring their pages, letters were chosen out of a basket. If the letter pulled was in the word umbrella, they circled it. But be careful – there were some letters that didn’t belong!
Song: Uakari
While we listened to a song about the primate uakari, we danced like monkeys!
Activity: Parachute
We brought out the big parachute! First, the kids tried to lift the letter U & P up by working together lifting the parachute. Then we put on music and the kids danced underneath while the grown-ups held it high.
Activity: Alphabet Soup
After the parachute, the kids each laid down on the floor and got a letter. Once all the letters were given, the kids got to find the mat that matched their letter.
Song: Alphabet Song
We all sang the Alphabet song one more time; this time, when we say each letter of the Alphabet, the boy or girl holding that letter is encouraged to hold it up high.
